Flying to Iowa from Washington State is never easy. Not lots of options for direct flights. Go figure. So through Dallas was the plan. Damn thunderstorms. One redeye to Chicago later, I arrived in Iowa with a lot of bags and not enough sleep. But I didn’t care! I was at RAGBRAI for the second time!

Of course, I had a booth at the Expo. It was fun, although I wish I signed up earlier to get a better spot. But I was able to meet lots of cool folks who I am sure will soon be big BUTTHEADS!

Rock Valley, Iowa was the start of this year’s ride. There was some concern about their ability to host, due to massive flooding in June, but they pulled it off, and were amazing hosts! The town is still recovering, but they threw us one hell of a party, and got us off to a great start.

First day of ride. Hot. Windy. But hey, who’s that dude on the bike? Lance Armstrong. No kidding. Two years in a row. Say what you will about him, he can still ride a bike. Clearly not at Tour level anymore, as I caught him loping along through beautiful Iowa. He did spend the evening before┬ábar -tending at Rock Valley for flood relief the night before, so I’ll cut him some slack for being ‘slow’ since he was up late for a good cause. But ha. I caught him!

So far so good. This Northwesterner has to get used to the humidity, and I wish it was just a little less windy! But just the same as last year, awesome hospitality, and BEER. I’ve had some great BEER! So great, there will be a whole separate post about Iowa BEER. Stay tuned.
